Connecting to Zenvoices via the MCP connection

Read here how you can connect an MCP client to Zenvoices and which tools you can use afterwards

Written by Jèsel Broekema

Introduction

With the MCP connection you can connect an MCP client, such as Claude or ChatGPT, to Zenvoices. Each user connects their own MCP client and logs in with their own Zenvoices account. The MCP client only has access to data that the user can already see in Zenvoices. This article is intended for users who want to connect an MCP client and for administrators who make the connection available.

Before you start

Nobody has permissions for the MCP connection by default. An administrator therefore first assigns the permissions to the roles or users that are allowed to connect an MCP client. See the section ‘User permissions’ for all permissions that belong to the MCP connection.

Connecting to the MCP connection

You connect as follows:

  1. Ask your administrator for the MCP connection URL, or copy it yourself via Manage / Organisation / MCP if you have access to it.

  2. Open your MCP client and add a new MCP server or connector.

  3. Paste the MCP connection URL into your MCP client.

  4. Log in with your own account on the Zenvoices login page, as shown in the image below.

  5. Check the requested permissions and approve them if you agree.

The connection remains active for 90 days. After that, you need to approve the connection again.

Available tools

After connecting, your MCP client can use the following tools, depending on your permissions. Each tool is followed by the technical name under which it appears in your MCP client.

  • View account and permissions (whoami): see which account the connection uses, which company is selected and which permissions you have.

  • Retrieve companies (companies_get): see the companies you have access to. You can also search by the name or code of a company.

  • Select company (select_company): choose the company you want to work in. This choice is saved until you choose another company.

  • Search transactions (archive_transactions_search): search the transaction archive, for example by supplier, invoice number, amount, date or fiscal year. This includes purchase invoices, journal entries and archived transactions.

  • Search documents (archive_documents_search): search the document management archive, for example for contracts and other stored documents. This only works in companies where the document management module is enabled.

  • View transaction details (transaction_get): view the details of a single transaction, including transaction lines, VAT, attachments, payments, authorisation history and comments. You can also see which automation rules were applied, how the transaction proposal was created and whether the transaction has already been exported.

  • Retrieve transactions for authorisation (transactions_for_authorisation_get): retrieve the transactions that are currently waiting for your authorisation.

Please note: your MCP client only shows the tools for which you have the user permission. If a tool is missing, ask your administrator whether your role has the corresponding permission.

Coming soon

We are working on a next version of the MCP connection. It will include the following tools:

  • Managing automation rules and booking rules

  • Retrieving details of documents from document management

  • Submitting documents for uploading & importing

Viewing approved connections

Administrators can see the approved connections via Manage / Organisation / MCP, under ‘MCP clients’.

Managing the MCP connection URL

Administrators can find the MCP connection URL via Manage / Organisation / MCP. Here you can copy the URL and share it with the users who need it. You can also generate a new MCP connection URL here.

User permissions

Two types of permissions apply to the MCP connection. The permission ‘MCP connection’ gives access to the MCP connection. In addition, an administrator gives access to specific tools via the permissions below. A user can only use the tools for which the corresponding permission has been assigned.

Permissions for users

  • MCP connection: access to the MCP connection.

  • MCP connection | Archive | Search transactions: use the tool ‘Search transactions’.

  • MCP connection | Archive | Search documents: use the tool ‘Search documents’.

  • MCP connection | Transactions | Transaction details: use the tool ‘View transaction details’.

  • MCP connection | Transactions | Transactions for authorisation: use the tool ‘Retrieve transactions for authorisation’.

Permissions for administrators

  • Pages | Manage | Organisation | MCP: access to the page for the MCP connection.

  • Pages | Manage | Organisation | MCP | MCP clients: view the approved connections.

  • Pages | Manage | Organisation | MCP | MCP connection: access to the MCP connection URL.

  • Pages | Manage | Organisation | MCP | MCP connection | Generate new MCP connection URL: generate a new MCP connection URL.

Points of attention

  • The MCP connection URL applies to all users in the organisation.

  • If you generate a new MCP connection URL, all users in the organisation need to authorise the MCP connection again.

  • The connection remains active for 90 days. After that, each user needs to approve the connection again.

  • An MCP client can only access data that the user can see in Zenvoices.

  • Access to the MCP connection does not automatically give access to all tools. The corresponding permission must be assigned for each tool.
